CARLSBERG SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE
DIVISION 1 EAST
TEIGNMOUTH 3 OKEHAMPTON 0
Teignmouth made it two wins from two games as three second half goals ensured their victory at Coombe Valley in this match sponsored by Darnley Developments.
As in last weeks fixture Teigns were slow out of the blocks, their opponents having lost both their opening games causing an air of complacency in Teigns ranks.Teigns could have been behind in the fourth minute but for the alertness of home 'keeper Liam Jones who saved well at the feet of Okehampton's Mortimer. Teigns first meaningful attempt on goal came in the fourteenth minute Jamie Surman rasping volley from Geoff Breslan's corner was blocked by visiting 'keeper Scarry. One minute later Adam Fay set up Craig Stonelake who's lashed shot span wide. Teigns kept the pressure on and were denied a spot-kick when Mark Dyson was pulled back in the penalty area. The visitors long ball tactics were troubling the home defence as the fast forwards found space again Mortimer got through but a perfectly timed tackle from captain Alex Blackburn prevented any shot on goal. A great pass from Fay set up Adam Hill but Scarry saved Hills shot. Jaime Dodge carried the ball out of defence and played a neat ball to Hill who cut inside and drilled a shot towards the near post but again Scarry turned the ball around the post. G.Breslan swung in the corner and Surman was pushed
but despite vociferous appeals no penalty was awarded. Fay created another chance for Hill but Hill's shot flashed wide. Jones made two top draw saves to thwart Okehampton as the long ball caught out the home defence. With thirty four minutes gone Terry Breslan was up ended in the box and Teigns saw yet another penalty appeal waved away by the referee. Almost immediately T.Breslan had the chance to open the scoring but pulled his effort wide. The visitors caught Teigns again with the long ball in the thirty seventh minute and Mortimer raced clear beating Jones with a well struck shot but to the relief of the home fans the ball cannoned of the post and was hacked clear. On the stroke of half-time Fay shot over from the edge of the box. Despite having a generous share of possession Teigns had not outwitted their opposition who had defended well and looked dangerous on the counterattack.
Some harsh words a half-time from joint manager Andy Paddon put Teigns back on track and in the first minute of the second half G.Breslan's quick throw was headed on by Fay to Stonelake who volleyed home at the near post to break the stalemate. A minute later G.Breslan's surging run into the penalty area was halted by a rash challenge right in front of the referee. Teigns player manager picked himself up and dispatched the resulting penalty. Two goals in a many minutes put Teigns in the driving seat, Andy Breslan putting in another good shift in central midfield setting attacks going with some intelligent passing. Teigns still struggled to turn their dominance into goals, Hill was again foiled by Scarry, Fay shot wide after Surman had headed a corner back across goal and Dodge headed wide from Teigns next corner. On sixty-three minutes Okehampton hit back, Prowse shot wide. With twenty minutes left Ashley Webber replaced Hill and Teigns continued to attack, Matt Boyer came on for Surman as Teigns started to dictate the game. In the eightieth minute Dyson's cross found Webber but a goal line clearance stopped Webber from adding to the score then in the attack Dyson sped clear his twisting run completely out foxed his marker and he slammed the ball home for the third goal. Stonelake almost added a forth his raking shot whistling over the cross-bar.
Teigns deserved to take the points at the final whistle and will be keen to keep the momentum going next week when League newcomers Bickleigh visit Coombe Valley. Kick off 3.00pm.
